Biosphere REGIONS
With each passing year, the urgency of tackling environmental issues becomes clearer: we only have
one planet, and it is in danger. Our relationship with nature and with other living beings needs a radical rethink in order to address these issues - we need to design a sustainable world. Biosphere reserves, also known as biosphere regions, have shown that it is possible to live in this world while also establishing a harmonious relationship with nature.
You are invited to take inspiration from the solutions already implemented in these spaces to build a better future, with full respect for nature and our vibrant cultural heritage.
Biosphere REGIONS are...
LARGE AREAS
Spanning an area half the size of Yukon across Canada, BRs typically include a national or provincial park, representing Canada's iconic landscapes.
ORGANIZATIONS
19 non-governmental,
non-profit organizations governed by four pillars of work including biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, climate action and reconciliation.
CONVENORS
BRs are gathering
different stakeholders
and rightsholders,
bringing people around
a common table to find solutions for challenging
and complex problems.
COMMUNITIES
Groups of local residents
and businesses working towards a common sustainable development goal. They are also part of a 700+ member network of BRs around the world.
IMPLEMENTING
GLOBAL MANDATES
UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Convention of Biological Diversity and the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples - at a
local scale.
PROMOTING RECONCILIATION
BRs are on a journey
towards truth and reconciliation, where they
are supporting Indigenous nations priorities at the
local level.
